Andrew Leiser

Andrew Twohy Leiser, 88, of Davis, passed away May 16, 2011 at home. He had been an area resident for 47 years.

Andrew was born May 13, 1923 in Rickey Rapids, Washington to Frances and Oliver Leiser. He graduated with his PhD in Horticulture from UCLA and worked as a professor and professor emeritus at UCD Environmental Horticulture. Prior to UCD, Andrew worked for Purdue University in Indiana and W.R. Grace in Maryland. He was known internationally for his extensive published works and projects in wetland restoration and erosion control. After retiring from UCD in 1991 Andrew worked in ecology and revegetation with the US Corp of Engineers, Lake Tahoe Conservancy, Cal Trans and the US Bureau of Roads and taught courses all over the United States for the University of Wisconsin. He was past president of the California Horticulture Society and past president of Western Region, National and International Plant Propagators Society. Andrew has been very involved in the Masonic Lodge, Boy Scouts, UC Davis Agricultural Day flower judging and the Buick Club where he and his son, Mark took numerous cross country trips in his 1938 Buick.

Andrew was preceded in death by his first wife, Vera H. Lieser.

Andrew is survived by his wife, Shirley J. Leiser of 33 years; children: Chris Leiser, Mark Leiser, Kathleen Leiser-Smith; step-children: Jeanne Chasko, Caroline Fjord, Jim Dana, Steve Dana; siblings: Walter Leiser, Mann Leiser, Drusilla Coakley as well as sixteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

A private family interment will take place at Davis Cemetery. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at St. Martins Church in Davis in the Fall.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the UC Davis Arboretum, Attn: Judy Hayes, 1 Shields Avenue, Valley Oak Cottage, Davis, CA 95616. Please put "In memory of Andrew Leiser" in the memo line.
