Alice (Keith) Nelson was born in Canton, South Dakota on March 27, 1915 to Silas and Nellie Keith. She grew up there with her two sisters. Alice received her Bachelor's degree from Dakota Wesleyan University, and her Master's degree from the University of South Dakota in Vermillion. After college, she taught high school English and Latin, where she met her future husband, Klayton E. Nelson, who was also teaching there. They were married on Sept. 4, 1942, and settled in Davis after the war, where Klayton joined the faculty at UCD and taught in the viticulture department until his retirement in 1986. Alice and Klayton enjoyed the many friendships formed during his years of teaching. They raised two children in the home they built in Davis. They were long- time members of the Davis Community Church. She and her husband were able to travel the world, taking sabbaticals to South Africa and Australia, and traveling to many countries with Klayton's work. Alice worked at the UCD Registrar's Office for several years later in her life. Her husband passed away in 1988.
Alice is survived by her children: Jim Nelson and his wife Coleen of Modesto, and Janet Heringer and her husband Les of Chico. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Kirk and Craig Nelson, and Melissa, Scott, and Lee Heringer. Her two sisters, Evelyn Turgeon and Lucy Gran, both of Washington, preceded her in death.
