Beverly Jean Whisler died at Courtyard Health Care Center in Davis at the age of 85 on August 11, 2008. She was preceded in death by her husband John E. Whisler in March 2001, her parents, Richard and Nettie Kevern, and her brother Glenn Kevern.
Born on April 9, 1923, Beverly was a long-time resident of Davis. Born in Bremerton, Washington where her father worked at the navy ship yard, Beverly moved with her family to Martinez, California in the 1920s. Beverly graduated first from high school in Martinez, and then from University of California Berkeley with a bachelors degree in English literature. She then earned the equivalent of a Masters Degree in Library Science, also from UC Berkeley. After completing her advanced degree in the mid-1940s, Beverly worked as a librarian at the UC Davis Shields Library, where she modernized the library collection when it reopened after World War II. Beverly retired from the University when she had her first son in 1952. She was active in the community, volunteering as a librarian at Valley Oak Elementary School in the 1960s, as a den mother for Cub Scout Troop 111, and with the Friends of the Davis Public Library in the 1970s. Beverly enjoyed reading mysteries, gardening and watching the birds that were attracted to her yard. Her love of nature is one of many traits she handed down to her children.
Beverly is survived by her two sons, John Raymond Whisler of Stockton, and Edward Dean Whisler of Davis, and her granddaughter Katy Jean Whisler of Stockton.
