Bruce Arnold Schaffer passed away peacefully on Tuesday evening, Jan. 15, 2013. Born and raised in the Noe Valley District of San Francisco, he was the son of Arnold and Irma Schaffer and brother to Linda Irias (Julian), Michael Schaffer (Norma), Donald Schaffer (Claire), Catherine Neff (Michael) and Stephen Schaffer (Anna). He graduated from Mission High School in 1960, where he was well known for his basketball skills. He served two years in the U.S. Army at the Headquarters Battery 3rd Battalion 81st Artillery stationed in Korea and later on he worked as a civilian employee for the Department of the Army at the Presidio in San Francisco where he retired after serving 25 years. After his retirement, Bruce settled in Davis, California to be near his family. Bruce enjoyed fast and "mean" looking cars, going to the race track for the horse races, trips to Reno, fishing, stock investments, playing pool and a good political discussion. He will be remembered for his love of animals, his gentle heart, his generosity, he was a terrific listener and he always had a kind word for everyone. Bruce was well known for saying "Start saving and investing your money when you are young so that you won't have to worry about it when you get old." Bruce suffered with diabetes but never complained. He is now at peace. Bruce is survived by many nieces and nephews and he leaves behind his best buddy Samantha a�" 'Sam' the cat. A scripture service will begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Jan. 18, at the Wiscombe Funeral Home, 116 D St. Davis. A funeral Mass will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19, at St. James Church, 1275 B St. in Davis, with burial at the Davis Cemetery immediately following. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the local SPCA or to your favorite charity.
