Clara Meyerhoff

June 27, 1916 — July 27, 2014

Clara Meyerhoff (nee Janzow) was a loving and devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, and aunt, and a faithful servant of God. Born and raised in St. Ansgar, Iowa along with her six siblings, Clara lived through a period of vast social and technological transformation and liked telling stories of her life which often underscored just how much changed during her lifetime.

After earning an associate degree in nursing, Clara worked in Denver as a nurse. In her late 30's she met her husband to be, Otto, who had moved from his birthplace in Kansas to the Bay Area. They were soon married and made a home in Oakland where they raised their two children, Joan and Paul. Clara's resourcefulness served her well as a homemaker and day care provider for other children. Four years after retiring from a career as an elementary school teacher, Otto suffered a debilitating stroke, and Clara cared for him selflessly for 14 years before his death. By then they had moved to Davis to be closer to family, and Clara established her home and new friends there, where she lived for the last 23 years. Clara's loves were taking care of her family, serving Christ and her church, cooking and baking, and fostering loving relationships with friends and family. The joy she gained from these relationships and her faith in God fueled her determination to live and overcome various physical hardships, and kept her going for 98 years. Clara will be dearly missed by her children Joan and Paul, her grandchildren Lauren, Kelly, and Chris, her sister Adele and brother Richard, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends and caregivers who enriched her life.

Clara's family is grateful for the friendship, care and support provided by the Davis Lutheran Church community, Vicki and Paula from Citizens Who Care, Clara's neighbors in Rancho Yolo, Carol Rayshel, Tom Lengtat, the doctors and staff from Sutter, University Retirement Community skilled nursing and Astoria Vista, and all other people who have provided care, support and other acts of kindness to Clara and our family. A memorial service and celebration of Clara's life will be held at 11:30am, Saturday, August 2nd at Davis Lutheran Church, 317 E 8th Street, Davis which will be followed by a reception in the church fellowship hall. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to: Citizens Who Care 409 Lincoln Ave Woodland CA 95695 or Davis Lutheran Church - For use in Health Ministries 317 East 8th St Davis CA 95616
