Edward Dean Whisler passed away Tuesday morning, July 4, 2023, at Sutter Hospital in Sacramento, following a brief illness. Ed was born July 7, 1958, in Sacramento, California. He lived his entire life in Davis, attended Davis High School, and graduated from California State University Sacramento with a Bachelor of Science degree in wildlife biology.
Ed was one of the top birders and wildlife biologists in the Davis, area for the past forty years. He was very generous in sharing his vast knowledge with the Davis community. He was co-designer of West Pond and North Davis Ponds, both constructed in the early 1990s. Here he led many bird walks. He coordinated the wetlands cleanup days for many years.
Ed Whisler was a friendly and familiar presence at the Davis Food Coop, the Davis Library, Davis Community Meals, and in his J Street neighborhood. He is survived by his brother, John Whisler, his niece, Kathryn Whisler, of Stockton.
Visitation will take place Wednesday, July 12, 2023 from 10:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Smith Funeral Home (116 D Street,Davis, CA 95616). A graveside service will be held on August 2, 2023 at 10:00 AM at the Davis Cemetery (820 Pole Line Road, Davis, CA 95618). In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the national Audubon society in Ed’s memory.
