Floyd Fenocchio

June 21, 1938 — December 21, 2014

Floyd Wilbert Fenocchio passed peacefully at Sutter Memorial Hospital on Dec. 21, 2014, at the age of 76, with his daughter Dianna, son Dan, and companion Linda Winter by his side. His children, grandchildren and extended family were ever-present in body and spirit throughout his short but brave battle with congestive heart failure.

A longtime resident of Davis, Floyd was born on June 21, 1938, at home on Gregory Avenue in West Sacramento. He was the fourth and last child born to Dominico Francisco Fenocchio and Isabelle Catherine (Semas) Fenocchio. Floyd grew up in West Sacramento as part of a loving family actively involved in farming, sports, music, educational programs, and religious participation at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

In 1952-56, Floyd attended Clarksburg High School where he excelled in academics, student-community service, student government where he served in leadership positions, and a variety of sports. Floyd was exceptionally talented in baseball as a first baseman and developed a lifelong passion for the game. While at Clarksburg High School, Floyd met Sandra "Sandy" Summy, his future wife, where both were actively involved in school and community activities.

After high school graduation, Floyd attended Sacramento State University, graduating in 1960. His freshman year, Floyd served as class president and was recognized repeatedly for his outstanding leadership and organizational skills. He and Sandy were married shortly thereafter on June 26, and lived several years in Sacramento where they both taught elementary school. They were blessed with two children, Dianna and Dan, while living in Sacramento, and then moved to Davis in 1967.

That same year, Floyd began his career in public school administration as principal of Wolfskill Elementary School in Winters. He then took a position in 1969 with the Davis Joint Unified School District as principal of Birch Lane Elementary School, which was the beginning of a long administrative career in Davis. In 1976, Floyd was assigned as principal of West Davis Intermediate School (now Robert E. Willett Elementary School) and served there until 1978.

At an especially difficult time in the school district, Floyd's talent in administrative and educational leadership resulted in a promotion to deputy superintendent from 1978 to 1982, and then associate superintendent of curriculum and instructional services from 1982 to 1996, while also serving as interim superintendent on two separate occasions. Floyd was appointed superintendent of the Davis Joint Unified School District in 1996 and served until his retirement in 1998.

He is well-recognized and revered for his love of students, support to teachers and classified employees, ability to build consensus and work effectively with diverse groups, attendance at nearly all student sports and performing arts events, and promotion of educational excellence throughout the school district. Floyd served the Davis community and its students for decades with great integrity, humanity, love and dignity.

Floyd found great joy and satisfaction in being involved with his children's and grandchildren's activities, and he and his wife Sandy fostered strong family values. Both of their children excelled in sports and academics, with daughter Dianna as an acclaimed swimming champion and son Dan as an athlete in football, basketball and baseball. After retirement, Floyd was especially devoted to his two grandsons, Daniel and Jonah, and never missed their school activities or sporting events. He was their coach and mentor from T-ball through high school varsity baseball, and could be seen on sports fields all over California and beyond, cheering on his beloved grandsons.

In addition to his devotion to family, Floyd was an avid reader, loved music of many varieties, played bridge in the same group for more than 30 years, enjoyed hiking and camping, worked out at a health club daily, gardened and always showed a deep interest in everyone he knew and met. He also is well-known for his service-oriented attitude and his willingness to help others. Everyone who knows Floyd would agree that he is one of the kindest, most gentle and most devoted persons they have had the privilege to know.

Floyd is survived by his daughter Dianna Lynn (Fenocchio) Henrickson, son-in-law Mark Edward Henrickson, son Daniel Aaron Fenocchio, daughter-in-law Lesley Anne (Fildes) Fenocchio, grandsons Daniel Scott Henrickson and Jonah Edward Henrickson (all living in Davis), and brother, Donald Frances Fenocchio in Clarkbsurg. Floyd was predeceased by his wife, Sandra Jeane (Summy) Fenocchio, parents Dominico Francisco Fenocchio and Isabelle Catherine (Semas) Fenocchio, brother Harold Richard Fenocchio, and sister Marilyn June (Fenocchio) Collins.

A memorial service for friends and the community will be held at the Brunelle Performance Hall on the campus of Davis High School in a few weeks on a date yet to be determined and will be open to anyone who wishes to attend. The family will have a private graveside service at an earlier date.
