James Vernon Carroll

June 23, 1941 — February 17, 2025

James Vernon Carroll, best known as Jim, died on Monday February 17, 2025 at Atria Covell Gardens, in Davis, CA, his home for the last 7 years.

Jim was born in Sacramento, CA on June 23, 1941, the only son of Gladys and Vern Carroll. He spent his early years in San Francisco and graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1959. While studying at UC Santa Barbara he met the love of his life, Andie Carroll, they married in 1963. Jim competed in distance running events for the UC Santa Barbara Track and Cross Country teams, graduating in 1964.

Jim and Andie were married for 54 years until her passing in 2018. They moved to Portland, OR where Jim got his Masters of Arts in Teaching from Reed College in May of 1965. Jim entered the Army and they were stationed in Germany and Texas. He served as a Captain in Vietnam and was awarded the Bronze Star for his service.

The couple settled in Pleasanton, CA in the early 1970s. Jim and Andie were members of St. Augustine Catholic Church in Pleasanton and were active in the church and choir. Jim taught at Dublin and Amador Valley High Schools for many years and also coached their Cross Country and Track teams. Additionally, he taught at Los Positas Community College. In retirement, he and Andie spent several years in Incline Village, NV and enjoyed trips to Hawaii and Healdsburg, CA when the weather got too cold.

Jim is survived by his son, Peter, daughter in law Christie, grandchildren Abby and Bryce. He was preceded in death by his parents, Gladys and Vern Carroll and his beloved wife, Andie Carroll.

He stopped coaching when Peter got into high school, but enjoyed cheering him on. That cheering continued, as in his adult years Peter competed in marathons and Ironmans. Jim also loved hearing about his grandchildren’s accomplishments in soccer, cross country and track, and before his mobility declined he enjoyed getting out to their sporting events.

Jim was an avid sports fan, always following his favorite teams the SF Giants and 49ers. He and Peter enjoyed many years of attending Giants games both at Candlestick and then Pac Bell Park. They had season tickets during the years Barry Bonds was hitting all his home runs.
