Jane Low

November 30, 1931 — September 16, 2019

Jane Gee Low, 87, of Davis, CA, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2019, at Palm Gardens Senior Living in Woodland, CA. Born as Chu Ying Gee on November 30, 1931, in the village of Tuligang, 土梨崗, in the Toishan region of China, Jane was the daughter of Fong Gee and Chack Ngau Wong.

Jane was very young when her father emigrated to the United States. He opened a stationery store in San Francisco’s Chinatown and sent money back to Jane, her mother, and her brother Johnny. When Jane was about seven years old, the three of them moved from the village to live in Hong Kong. About seven years later, they moved back to the village, where Jane finished high school.

During World War II, Jane and the rest of the residents of her village were forced to hide in the nearby hills when the Japanese soldiers periodically passed through. After the war, Jane and her mother moved back to Hong Kong while Johnny emigrated to the United States. In 1950, Jane met and married Harry Low, who was visiting Hong Kong from California.

Jane and Harry settled in Davis, California. They had 2 sons, Monty and Andy. While primarily a homemaker, to help make ends meet Jane worked as a line sorter at the Hunt’s canning plant during the 1960s and 1970s. In the early 1970s, Jane obtained her US citizenship and was then able to bring her mother to the states.

In their leisure time Harry and Jane enjoyed several trips to the South Pacific and Asia. When back in Davis, Jane and Harry enjoyed making improvements to the home and Jane took pride in her garden. Jane loved to cook and the table was always covered with many delicious dishes at family gatherings.

Jane enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who called her Ahnin. She is predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Harry; survived by children James Montgomery Low (Carol) and Joseph Anderson Low; grandchildren Christina Maldonado (Edgar), Joanne Liebert (Ed Chavez), Elizabeth Low (Greg Kumparak), Thomas Low (Rachelle Robinson); and great-grandchildren Destanee, Jasmine, Chloe and Camden.
