Katherine Wooden

February 2, 1918 — July 8, 2008

Katherine Lilienthal Wooden died at Davis, the 8th day of July 2008 at age ninety She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly sixty years, Wesley R. Wooden, in 2005.

Born on February 2, 1918, in San Francisco, California, Kay was a 1940 graduate of U.C. Davis, and a long time resident of Davis.

Kay attended Pomona College for two years (1937-39), majoring in Botany before transferring to U. C. Davis where she graduated in Ornamental Horticultural. Katherine met her husband, Wes, while both were attending college over a Border Collie puppy that was born at the U. C. D. sheep barn. They became engaged on May 1, 1940, and married later that year on December 19th.

Katherine a fourth generation San Franciscan and an eighth generation American was involved in many civic affairs within the Davis community. When her children were youngsters, she served as a Den mother to the Central Davis Cub Scouts, a Brownie leader in Girl Scouts, and involved with 4-H.

Over the years, Kay Wooden served as President of the Davis Flower Arrangers, as a nurse helper at Davis Senior High School, as a member and corresponding secretary of Sutter Davis Hospital, and as a member of the U. C. D. Scholarship committee for Yolo County recipients. In later years, she was in charge of the green house for the Davis Senior Center.

Mrs. Wooden is survived by her son, Wayne S. Wooden of Palm Springs; daughter Marilyn Shepherd of Patricks Point; daughter Joan Wooden of Davis; sister Edith and brother-in-law Benjamin Dorfman of San Francisco.

A private family burial will take place at Davis Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Wiscombes Davis Funeral Chapel. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of ones choice.
