Lois Helen Jones, age 82, of Woodland, died Oct. 22 at her home in Woodland from advanced Alzheimer’s. She was born in Utica, New York, to Frank and Maie Kriegel. She met her future husband, Earl, in high school when she was 14 and he was 16, and they married when she was 19.
After they married, they moved to Schenectady, NY, Binghamton, NY, and Waynesboro, VA, and settled in Memphis, TN, to raise their four children. There Lois returned to school, earning a degree in vertebrate zoology from Memphis State University (now the University of Memphis). She loved animals and volunteered for many years at Lichterman Nature Center in Memphis. She also worked at St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis.
Lois and Earl later moved to Birmingham, AL, Manassas, VA, and Norman, OK. When Earl retired, they settled in Beaufort, SC. She continued her animal volunteer work over the years. Two years ago they moved to Woodland.
She is survived by her loving husband of 63 years, Earl Jones; their children, Deborah Susan of Georgetown, KY, Chris Jones of Spokane, WA, Heather Jones of Davis, and Tamara Jones-Romero (Rafael) of Davis; and four grandchildren.
A private service will be held Thursday morning at Smith Funeral Home in Davis, with burial following at Woodland Cemetery.
