Marie Johnston Toy of Fairfield, CA passed away Wednesday, October 31, 2007, in Davis, CA after a long illness. Mrs. Toy was born in Fairhope, AL in Mobile County and was the last survivor of seven children born to George W. Johnston and Onie Marie Everett Johnston. She was the widow of Hugh Latimer Toy, Jr. with whom she had three daughters: Linda Reasonover, who passed away in 1992; Sheri Toy of Fairfield, CA; and Marsha Toy Engstrom of Woodland, CA. She is also survived by four grandchildren: Lisa Sowders of Henderson, KY; Norinda Reed of Kent, WA; Russell Reed of Fairfield, CA; and Cory Engstrom of Woodland, CA; and four great grandchildren: Savanna and Dylan Sowders of Henderson, KY; and Kira and Mia Carman of Kent, WA.
Mrs. Toy left her career as a private secretary to begin 44 years as a devoted wife and homemaker. A resident in the Fairfield area since 1959, she was a Sunday school teacher for over 40 years, and at the time of her death, a member of Temple Baptist Church where she served on the kitchen and bereavement committees. She also volunteered with various other non-profits, including the Red Cross, Girl Scouts, Rainbow Girls, and numerous schools in the Fairfield area. Throughout her life, she was an avid gardener, and enjoyed needlework, crafts, baking and cake decorating. Children were her greatest joy, especially her own.
The family held a private Memorial Service on Sunday, November 4, 2007 at Wiscombe's Davis Funeral Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made in her name to your local Hospice organization.
