Nicholas Mahoney

November 17, 1965 — December 6, 2014

Nicholas Juri Kaldro Mahoney, 49, died unexpectedly at his home in Davis on Dec. 6, 2014, at the age of 49. Nick was born in Boston in 1965, to George Kaldro and Ella Louise Rutledge. He spent the second half of his childhood in Troy, Maine.

He is survived by his beloved mother and stepmother, Bronwen Day; his sisters, Kirsti Kaldro-Bridge and Maija Leyendecker; his devoted wife, Cydney Mahoney, a family physician at UC Davis; and his adoring sons, Sean and Rhys Mahoney, students at Emerson Junior High and Davis High School.

Nick earned a bachelor's degree in economics at Northeastern University in Maine, and studied at Berklee College of Music. A singer, guitarist, pianist and songwriter, Nick formed his own band, which aired its top-10 hit "Maraschino Cherry" on Boston radio.

He was a talented all-round athlete in baseball, soccer, hockey, golf, sailing, skiing and rock climbing. He passed on his love of the outdoors and these sports to both Sean and Rhys.

Graduating from the University of Southern Maine Law School, he was a dedicated attorney for 15 years in Portland, Maine. With his characteristic zeal for new ideas, experiences and frontiers, in 2012 he began pursuit of a graduate degree in molecular biology at University of California Davis. At the time of his passing, he was a Ph.D. candidate in the biochemistry, molecular, cellular and developmental biology program, where among delightful peers, he experienced much intellectual growth and joy.

Nick's wit, laughter, dedication and love of life was contagious. His memory will live on in his family, many friends and colleagues.

Visitation and viewing with his family at Wiscombe Funeral Home, 116 D St. in Davis, will be held Saturday, Dec. 13, from 2 to 5 p.m. A memorial service is scheduled for Sunday, Dec. 28, at 3 p.m. at the Unitarian Universalist Church, 27074 Patwin Road in Davis, to honor and celebrate Nick's passionate, soulful life.
