Pai-Yeu Hwang passed away on January 5, 2015 surrounded by family members, in her Davis home from congestive heart failure at the age of 96. Born on October 20, 1918 in Taiwan to Mr. and Mrs. Jin-Tu Pai, she was the second of nine children.
In 1937, she married Wen-Tze Hwang, DVM, the eldest son of twelve. Together they lived near Taipei with Wen-Tze's parents and siblings, while raising their own 6 children. Her cheerful, outgoing personality, skilled cooking talents, and efficient organizing ability cultivated a loving family atmosphere and eventually won her the model mother award of the town in 1965. All of her six children completed advanced educational degrees and worked successfully in different professions in Germany and the U.S., including three doctors, one architect, one accountant, and one pharmacist. She was very proud of all her children's accomplishments. In 1997, they permanently moved to Davis to be close to their children and grandchildren.
Over the past several years, Pai-Yeu battled numerous health issues. Despite these issues, she beat all odds to stay afloat, demonstrating her staunch and tenacious personality. She was as tough as a rock.
A resident of Davis for more than 16 years, she was preceded by the death of her husband, Wen-Tze Hwang of 63 years in 2000. She is survived by her four sons, Victor C.Y. Hwang and his wife Marian H.Y. Hwang of Hamburg, Germany, Ralph B. Hwang and his wife Freda F.Y. Hwang of El Macero, Wu-Yen Huang and his wife Arlette Gilson of Sacramento, and Chao-Yen Hwang and his wife Lee K. Hwang of Irvine; her two daughters, Barbara S.C. Hwang of Davis, and Jiin H. Felgner and her husband Philip Felgner of Rancho Santa Fe; nine grandchildren, George Hwang and his wife Esther Chu of San Mateo, Jessie Hwang and her husband Matt Lee of Mountain View, Calvin Hwang and his wife Kathy Ta of Los Angeles, Jamie Hwang and her husband Chase Thompson of Lake Oswego, Jay Hwang of Irvine, Peter Huang of New York, Hans Huang and his wife Meg of Minneapolis, Jeff Felgner of Irvine, and Scott Felgner of Rancho Santa Fe; six great-grandchildren, Katherine and Anna of San Mateo, Nathan and Abigail Lee of Mountain View, Rhodes Thompson of Lake Oswego, and Emmeline Hwang of Los Angeles. She was greatly loved by all who knew her and will be missed immensely.
