Richard Stanley Mackey, 79, of Vacaville, CA, died Saturday, March 14 of pneumonia and congestive heart failure brought on by complications from Multiple Sclerosis.
Richard was born to the late Clay and Lucretia Mackey, Jan. 19, 1930, in Visalia, CA. Richard graduated from Visalia High School in 1948 and received a BA in Recreation from the University of California in 1952. He married Eleanor Buchter of Watsonville, CA, in 1953, moving to Texas where Richard completed his basic training after enlisting in the United States Army.
Richard was a school teacher and administrator who cared deeply about everything having to do with the field of education. He moved his family to Davis, CA, in 1965 to begin a career as Principal at North Davis Elementary School for over 15 years, and then taught 4th grade at West Davis Intermediate School until he retired in 1991. He enjoyed children and was passionate about making a difference i n the lives of all his students.
Richard loved to travel, especially by cruise ship, and after his retirement from the Davis Unified School District, he and his wife traveled to many places in the world including Egypt, Russia, China, and extensively throughout Europe. He loved the beach and spent many quality vacations with his family and friends at Pismo Beach, CA, as well as Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, and Hawaii.
Richard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Eleanor; two children: Carol Mackey Federighi of Pleasanton, CA, and her husband Bob, and Steven Mackey of Sacramento, CA, and his wife Tonia. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Ryan, Robert and Caroline Federighi of Pleasanton and Savannah Sterpe-Mackey of Sacramento.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be sent to the MS Society, Northern California Chapter, 1700 Owens Street, San Francisco, CA 95834.
A memorial service/viewing will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 19, at Wiscombe Funeral Home, 116 D Street, Davis, CA. Interment will be at the Davis Cemetery District for immediate family only.
