Rosemarie Schnathorst

April 16, 1930 — February 24, 2013

ROSMARIE A. SCHNATHORST (April 16, 1930 through February 24, 2013) and WILLIAM C. SCHNATHORST (May 8, 1929 through February 6, 2013) It can happen in a moment for some people and for our parents this was the case. Our father, William Charles Schnathorst, knew the moment he saw our mother, Rosemarie Antoinette Meyer, walk into a business class they were both attending that he would ask for her hand in marriage. Fortunately for us, our mother said "yes." Bill earned his Bachelor's degree in Botany in Laramie, Wyoming. After they married, Rosemarie joined him in Laramie while he completed his Master's. From there they moved to Davis where Bill completed his Ph.D. in Plant Pathology and enjoyed a long career as a Plant Pathologist for the USDA. He somehow found time to also fly model airplanes and to participate in Boy Scouts with his sons, work for a number of years as an environmental conservationist in Davis, and create beautiful gardens on Hunt Way and in Westwood. He also spent his retirement years fly fishing with Cal Kado, Bud Henle, and Mike Hoffmann. Together they frequented Pyramid Lake, Christmas Island, Alaska, and lots of streams and rivers throughout Northern California. Rosemarie was the consummate homemaker and an excellent cook. Diana, their first born, was born in 1955. Bill, their first son, followed 19 months later in 1956. Douglas would not come along for another five years. Needless to say, Rosemarie had her hands full raising their children but found time to enjoy playing bridge with her friends Tudy Duncan, Elsie Mirandi, Minnie Brenner, Pat Hull, Suzanne Stovall, Myrna Peterson, Edie Silva, and Kitty Qualset, just to name a few. In fact, in her hay day, she belonged to four different bridge clubs at once. Bill was born in 1929 and died on February 6, 2013. Rosemarie was born in 1930 and died three weeks after Bill on February 24th. It may seem unexpected that they died so close together, but, if you knew our parents, how much in love they were and how devoted they stayed to one another throughout their 61 years of marriage, you would not be surprised at all. Our parents' favorite getaway was their beautiful cabin in Lake Tahoe near Zephyr Cove. Bill and Rosemarie are survived by their son Bill and his wife Carmen; their daughter Diana (and Peter); their wonderful and talented grandchildren; Kaela, who will be graduating from U.C. Davis next fall and Casey who will be graduating from Davis High School this year. The Schnathorst family would like to express their gratitude to Sutter Oncology, Sutter Family Practice, and the staff with the Advanced Illness Management program for their wonderful care of Bill and Rosemarie. We would also like to thank the staff at Sutter Davis Hospital for the exemplary care they provided to Rosemarie. A Celebration of Bill and Rosemarie's lives will be held on Saturday, May 4, 2013, beginning at 1 p.m. at the Davis Community Church, 412 C Street, Davis, California.
