Therese passed Jan. 11, 2008 at Kindred Hospital in Folsom with her family at her side. She was 74 years old.
She was born in Arcadia, WI to August and Sophie Reck. The youngest of four children, she attended school in the small town of Arcadia where she displayed many talents; piano, acting, cheerleading, and Debate Club. Therese graduated from Arcadia High School in 1951. Her yearbook referred to her as having blond hair, twinkling eyes; pep for a girl twice her size. She attended St. Francis School of Nursing located in La Crosse, WI, and graduated in 1954 with a diploma in Nursing. Young, beautiful, educated, and with career in hand, Therese came to Southern California and took a nursing job at the Long Beach Memorial Hospital. She also joined the U.S. Navy Reserves and received her commission as an Ensign. Shortly thereafter she met a strapping young Marine, John Scofield, who later became her husband of 34 years.
Therese and John began their family with Michael, Cathy, & Karen and she continued her nursing career. The family moved to Simi Valley in 1962 and to Redding in 1972. Her career spanned 30 years during which she worked Critical Care, the Surgical Floor, and the Intensive Care Unit. Hospital newsletters recognized Therese for her enthusiasm, dedication and compassion to her profession, peers and patients. This was evident from the many cards and good wishes she received from patients/families for her warmth and kindness while they were hospitalized. As a testament to her devotion to nursing, Therese provided solely for the care of her husband when stricken with cancer. After his death in 1991, she retired and later moved to Davis in 1994, to spend more time with her children and grandchildren.
Therese and her family shared many interests: entertaining, camping, and traveling. She was an expert seamstress and avid reader. After moving to Davis, she enjoyed the Farmers Market, concerts at the Mondavi Center, and attending services at St. James Catholic Church. She spent time with Michael in Davis, Karen in San Rafael, and Cathy in Seattle.
Therese was preceded in death by her husband John and her sister Marcella. She is survived by her children Michael, daughter-in-law Elena Tarailo, Cathy and husband Mark Nicholson, Karen and husband Mike Levin. Grandchildren Maresa Scofield, Joel & Elliot Levin, mother-in-law Marion Wood, siblings Everett and Ruth, and nieces and nephew.
The family of Therese is grateful to Dr. Morrissey, UC Davis, and the entire staff of Kindred Hospital who tirelessly attended to Therese during her illness.
A memorial service will begin at 11:00a.m. on February 9th, 2008 at St. James Catholic Church located at 1275 B Street, Davis, CA 95616 followed by a reception. Flowers may be sent to St. James Church or donations may be sent to the Yolo County SPCA at P.O. Box 510 Davis, CA 95617 in memory of Therese Scofield.
