William D. Haggerty, 92, of Woodland, CA, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, April 22 at his home in St. Johns Retirement Community. Bill was born to William and Jessie Haggerty, Jan. 30, 1917, in Flint, MI. In 1924 the family vacationed in California, where Bills father decided that orange trees and sunshine were a lot better than Michigan winters. Bill graduated in 1935 from Polytechnic High School in Los Angeles, where he played football with former L.A. Mayor Tom Bradley. He married Vivienne Martin in 1940; they were married 55 years until her death in 1995. He worked 35 years for the Los Angeles Dept. of Water & Power. After he retired in 1965, they moved to Oceanside, CA., where he lived until moving to Woodland in June 2008, together with his good friend and companion Geraldine Wilson. Two children survive Bill: W. David Haggerty, Jr. of Davis and his wife Nola, and Deborah Haggerty-Chambers of Woodland and her husband Richard. He is also survived by four grandchildren: Kelly Haggerty of Davis, William Haggerty and his wife Claudia of Benicia, Thomas Haggerty and his wife Alayne of San Francisco and Kathleen Haggerty and her husband Stephen of Rohnert Park. In addition, he leaves four great-grandchildren: William and Taylor Haggerty of Roseville, and Barbara and Isabella Haggerty of Benicia. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be sent to St. Johns Retirement Village, 135 Woodland Avenue, Woodland, CA 95695. A memorial service will be held Sunday, April 26 at 3:30 P.M. at St. Johns. Wiscombe Funeral Home of Davis will perform the cremation. Interment will be at Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery at Point Loma, CA.
